Speaker: Faruq Marikar, Managing Partner, Nanobiz, LLC

Topic: Clean, Green & Sustainable:
Where Is the Business?

Clean Technologies, green products, sustainable businesses – are these advertising fads to assuage our consumption guilt and keep us buying? Where is the economic drive to move us from the "dirty" present to a clean future? Today we see venture capital firms that are liberally financing photovoltaic start-up companies; the Midwest awash in corn-based ethanol plants; better light bulbs, electric vehicles, a future hydrogen economy…where is it all headed, and who is making money?

Join us in September for answers to these questions - supplied by CM&E Director Faruq Marikar, Ph.D., who is a Managing Partner at Nanobiz, LLC. Faruq will kick off our 2008-09 season on Thursday, September 11th at Club Quarters, 40 West 45th Street, NYC.

Pasted Graphic Nanobiz, LLC is a consulting group that offers business, investment, patent and legal guidance on alternative energy, materials, clean tech and nanotechnology commercialization. They help major corporations in their growth initiatives, and small companies to find enabling partnerships and financing.

In his prior corporate career with Hoechst, Celanese and Gould, Dr. Marikar was responsible for planning and developing new business opportunities. Product/industry areas of his involvement include batteries, capacitors, fuel cells, films, paints, coatings, plating, corrosion, carbon fiber, graphite, specialty chemicals, plastics, electronic chemicals, ceramics, and composites.

After basic degrees in chemistry and a Ph.D. in engineering (Metallurgy/Materials Science) from the Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore), Faruq was a post-doc at Imperial College (London) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy, NY). He has 23 patents – in batteries, fuel cells, coatings and nanomaterials. Dr. Marikar served on an industrial advisory committee to the U.S. National Science Foundation. He was the first chairman of the U.S. Industrial Research Institute's External Technology Directors' Network.
