May meeting  Biodegradable Plastics Institute (BPI): Plastics without a Footprint
Plastics revolutionized the materials world in the twentieth century not just by replacing heavier, less durable metals, but by enabling unique, hitherto impossible to make products that are easily manufactured and cheap.  As plastics proliferated, their durability has become an environmental burden; and their fossil fuel origin, of questionable sustainability.  This talk will address steps towards bio-based feedstocks for plastics, engineering degradability upon disposal, and reducing the environmental footprint of plastics.  Our May Speaker, Steve Mojo, will clarify industry terminology, such as  'biobased', biopolymers', 'biodegradable' and 'compostable'; he will also explain the  drivers behind food scrap diversion and its benefits for manufacturers of compostables.

CM&E's May Speaker Steve Mojo, Executive Director, BPI.
Mr. Mojo is the Executive Director of the Biodegradable Products Institute, which represents the leading manufacturers and users of biodegradable plastics in the US and Canada. He has led the Institute's labeling efforts as well as in the harmonization of biodegradability and compostability standards in Europe, Asia and North America, and promoted the benefits of renewable resources.

Starting in biodegradable plastics 15 years ago, Steve worked and consulted for leading biodegradable plastic manufacturers, including Cargill, Cereplast and Warner-Lambert's Novon Products Group. Steve is an active participant in ASTM D20.96, the subcommittee for environmentally degradable plastics, where he helped to develop some of the key standards in use today.  He was on the Advisory Board for the California Integrated Waste Management Board's project on compostable materials and is actively involved with Wal-Mart's Sustainable Value Network. He also has served on the Board of Directors for the US Composting Council, where he led the development of the "Compostable Logo" certification program in conjunction with the BPI.

Earlier, Steve worked for Pfizer's Adams Brands and Consumer Health Divisions as a Product Manager and Category Director, Chewing Gums (Trident, Dentyne and Bubblicious brands), with responsibility for delivering sales and profits for Adams Brands largest category. Steve has an MBA in Marketing from Pace University.
