May meeting – Cereplast: Bioplastics that Can Compete
After three decades of "new and exciting" developments, bioplastics have captured less than one percent of the global plastics market. Renewable alternatives to traditional petroleum plastics that can be injection molded and thermoformed will be a great boon. Unfortunately, current pure bio-based plastics are not cost competitive, abundant or easy to process. The answer might be to combine "petro" and "bio" components to meet the performance, pricing and capacity challenges of the market.
Cereplast has commercialized hybrid bioplastics for automotive, consumer goods, electronics and packaging. These hybrids combine high bio-based content with the superior mechanicals and durability of traditional plastics. They use feed stock that is cheaper and less volatile in price than pure bioplastics. The hybrids are compatible with current plastic processing, and easy to scale up in production..
CM&E's May Speaker – Frederic Sheer, Chairman & CEO, Cereplast, Inc. Mr. Scheer joined the biodegradable plastics industry in 1994 through Montedison SpA. Foreseeing demand, he bought North American distribution rights for Mater-Bi™ resins, a 100% biodegradable resin produced by Novamont. Frederic created the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI), a non-profit organization, today the largest biodegradable association in the world, with over 40 members who include BASF, DuPont, NatureWorks and Dow. He is also a founder-member of the SPI Bioplastics Council. He was a merchant banker in Europe. Frederic is a Doctor of Laws from the University of Paris, with a Masters Degree in Finance and a Masters Degree in Political Sciences from Institut d'Etudes Politiques, Paris, France.
