Founded 61 years ago to promote basic research in the physical, chemical, biological and engineering aspects of the atomic sciences, Brookhaven today is a leading government laboratory with programs in energy, materials and life sciences ranging from research in biofuel feedstocks, to nanotechnology-based catalysts for fuel cell applications, to medical imaging to study and cure addiction. At the core of Brookhaven’s programs are world-class user facilities such as the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) and the Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) – facilities that enable researchers to learn about the assembly and fabrication of nano-structured materials and to probe their unique properties.

Dr. J. Patrick Looney will touch upon these activities and highlight collaboration opportunities for both large and small companies, designed to promote entrepreneurship and technology commercialization.

Dr. Looney, assumed the newly-created position of Assistant Laboratory Director for Policy and Strategic Planning at Brookhaven in 2005 to focus on strategic planning and building relationships. He oversees Brookhaven's business plan, which develops the direction of its scientific programs, as well as the Laboratory Directed R&D Program, and the Lab's technology transfer functions, including collaborations with industry.

After his B.S. in physics from the University of Delaware, Patrick earned M.S. and a Ph.D. in Physics from Penn State. He held research and policy positions at NIST from 1987 to 2002 before being named the Assistant Director, Physical Sciences and Engineering, in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, where he coordinated policy development and budget priorities. Looney is a Fellow of the AVS Science & Technology Society.
